Back...When I think of New Dorm I too think of rush. Back in 1981 I was the ASB Director of Housing and was asked to be in New Dorm to welcome students. It was the days before rush, and for the first time in over a decade – there were more students than air-conditioned rooms. Thus, girls who thought they would be in New were being sent up the hill to the old, non-air-conditioned dorms. I was asked to be there to explain how much “fun” the smaller non-air-conditioned dorms were. I recall a conversation with one irate mother, whose beautiful, and vapid, daughter was standing right next to her. (This was before the rise of Valium or I would have thought she gave her a bottle). She told me under no circumstances could her daughter be in a non-air-conditioned dorm, and certainly not that far from sorority row for rush. I never will forget her statement, “Her hair will fall and her hair is her crowning glory.”. I recall the girl was wearing a tiara, but this is probably due to flawed memory.
